Hailing from the forever-fertile Finnish black metal underground, MORGAL are one of that scene's best-kept secrets. With two of its members not even yet into their 20s, these ravenous young men have crafting absolutely electric, beWITCHing metal since their formation in 2014. To date, their releases have been incredibly limited or just plain impossible to attain - their debut album, 2016's Käärmesielu, was released in an edition of only 20 copies - but with Morgal, their wolfish cry shall now be heard far and wide. Fence-sitters and the false, your days are numbered.

Comprising a mere 15 minutes, the four songs making up Morgal are some of the most immediately exciting heavy metal of recent times, but draped in the velvety wings of ancient blackness. Each of these anthems literally explodes from the speakers with a rabid intensity and cocksure exuberance that are simply impossible to resist, each a hideous, hungry torrent of wild soloing, near-chaotically careening rhythm, and frothing-mad vox. They all exude the ageless wisdom of true black METAL - so ageless, in fact, that you'd be forgiven for mistaking Morgal as the work of very old men - but given frantic flight through youthful elan that's enviously advanced for their age.Morgal is a chain-breaking, sword-drawing, spell-invoking experience like no other...and then, as explosively as it began, it's over.

Pagan Black Metal, Sweden.

Isgärde is a solo project from Öland, founded by Somath in 2016, this is the artist behind all instruments and vocals. His work is based on the main idea to create black metal with a lyrical concept around the Swedish island Öland, with themes about solitude and nature. Soundwise, the music is shaped by heavy melodies and hints of both folk- and viking metal conveying into an atmospheric style of pagan black metal, with great melodies in their riffs.  Recommended!

Atmospheric and Experimental Black Metal from US.

Krukh debut album came out through Fallen Empire Records on the 26 of October following their Split "Torment Is Flesh" that came out on tape back in June under the same label. The album and tracks are in Ukranian but it translates to Absurdity.

Krukh are a three member band with Shawn Eldridge of Abysmal Gates and Death Fortress on the Drums,  Nizam Salimbayev and Markov Soroka (also member of Tchornobog, Aureole, Drown) from Russia and Ukraine on the strings and vocals. Three very gifted musicians that come from very diverse backgrounds, embodying their heritage through their music. "Безглуздість!" is a really good album full of deep emotion and craftsmanship.

"Herbstwind" by Ka-tet

Black Metal/Dark Metal, Germany.

Herbstwind is the only debut album of this band from Thuringia, independently published in bandcamp this year, originally released in June 2013. Ka-tet, the name of the band and some of their lyrical content pays homage to Stephen King literature. The term Ka-tet is borrowed from the eight-volume cycle The Dark Tower, meaning a community of beings pursuing the same goal. Their music is dark and atmospheric and some how melancholic.

Their sound is characterized by a melancholy mood with acoustic guitar parts gently increasing and building into intense melodic profundity up to furious outbursts of the 8-string guitar. The complex drums and deep bass emphasise this dark atmosphere. The vocals vary from deep growls to high screaming and whispering, which gives the voice a great dynamic. Their expressive texts pick up topics that deal primarily with the depths of human existence.

"Illustra Nos" by Weltschmerz

Weltschmerz is a Dutch black metal band known for their ferocious live performances. The band was founded in 2009 releasing several demos and its first full-length album in 2014 entitled Odium Humani Generis through Immortal Frost Productions. The band has since then been taking Europe by storm with live appearances in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Denmark and Switzerland.

"Exitium" by Primaire

Raw Black Metal from Germany.

Primaire is a new formation of veterans from Bavaria (featuring members of Anencephaly, HateCult of the Cunt, Lower Than Zero, Ysbryd and Blutwald) who just unleashed this year their debut album "Exitium" on  2nd-October-2018. What first grabbed my attention was the great art-cover of the album created by Astaroth Cerebre and it didn't disappoint when I hit the play. Primaire plays traditional raw black metal, fierce and powerful with dynamic catchy riffs but also with excellent dark atmospheres and melodies the most elitists will approve off. Their themes are based on anti-religion, death and hate. The only negative is their tracks are perhaps a bit short but on the bright side it won't bore you and is what makes you crave for more!

"Undead Poetry" by Thysantmünz

Black Metal from Russia.

This is the first time I listened to Thysantmünz, from Russia who has no information as to who the band members are, but aside that, this debut title caught my eye. "Undead Poetry" is a nostalgic offering of raw black metal verging into atmospheric even at times due its melancholy in some of their tracks and its cathartic feel. Overall it's a good gritty raw black metal debut and aside its melancholy you'll encounter fists-full of ravaging fast paced to sate your thirst for aggression with anthems of glory, honour, ancestry and tradition.

"Sombr Moebrd" Demo by VOËMMR

Voëmmr belongs to the clandestine Aldebaran Circle, Portuguese black metal underground group that conceals their name, alongside Ordem Satânica, Trono Além Morte and Occelensbrigg.

Sombr Moebrd was released on cassette tape by Harvest of Death, a sub-label of Signal Rex, and went on sale on the release date, August 15th.

Comprising three new, lengthy tracks, this demo is the band's first new recordings since their bolt-from-the-blue debut album, Nox Maledictvs, last year, which has justifiably caused quite a stir in the black metal underground ever since.

Truly, that same strangely shimmering yet hellishly hysteric atmosphere which provocatively marked out Nox Maledictvs is here in full on this new demo - in fact, it goes even more beyond The Beyond. Stopping clocks and heartbeats alike, VOËMMR's paradoxically wounded/violent iteration of black metal takes the rawness for which its Aldebaran Circle is renown and rips its inside out, exposing the ghostly clean tones that lurk within, only to be corrupted by a very-nearly-insane sort of execution. It's uncomfortable listening, but endlessly compelling.

With more new works to be revealed in time, VOËMMR's new demo should satisfy the sickly hunger that lurks in the most depraved.

Coldworld, is a one-man band created in 2005 by Georg Börner (all instruments, vocals and lyrics). This year it has returned with a couple of EP's ("Interludium" and "Nostalgia" both in July) and a split with Farsot titled "Toteninsel" in September.

"Nostalgia" caught my eye as it's a good tribute to 90s black metal, not a repertoire of old covers but original music in raw 90s style, with great cold atmospheres and an old school sound. Recommended!

"Visions Of Doom" EP by Finis

First time I've listened to Finis, a mysterious trio from Germany,  and to their debut EP "Visions of Doom" relesed by Iron Bonehead Productions on CD and 12" vinyl format. The CD version shall include the band's sold-out debut demo, At One With Nothing, as bonus tracks.

It is best described by the label as a ghostly and gangrenous creation with their compositions patiently building, swirling about the listener in an entrancing haze, and then layers fall off while others are built back upon, creating further trance - and even more tension. It's subtly bewitching, and more so uniquely done when placed within the wider context of the modern black/death underground.

Overall is a good black metal album with some tracks having intense fast blasts beats I enjoyed such "Diabolus Ab Inferi" and "Return to Winterborgir" being my favourite, other tracks are perhaps more generic and reminiscent of Immortal and Abbath but still enjoyable and confident many of you will appreciate this album.

"Fredagsmys" by VANHELGA

"Endémique" EP by Emprise

Ungfell moved from strength to strength and released its sophomore full-length "Mythen, Mären, Pestilenz" in the Spring of 2018 through Eisenwald Tonschmiede. Having replaced Infermità with Vâlant on drums, the release showed a particular focus on songwriting and aggression in performance, without sacrificing the intricacies that made Ungfell easily distinguishable from other acts. “Gaqtaqaiaq” EP by Ifernach

When it comes to the Québécois Black Metal scene, Ifernach is a strong new solo project that shouldn’t go amiss. I first heard and listened Ifernach thanks to Corde Raide Productions when in 2016 it released a batch of 50 tapes of  the first EP Laments of Ériu and I was sold at first hearing.

The brain and soul behind Ifernach, is Finian Patraic who writes all lyrics in French covering subjects and tales of native ancestry, forgotten ancient souls, cults and old rituals from the Gaspé Peninsula in Canada (a province of Quebec). And hence, he describes his music as Gaspesian black metal.

Soundwise, expect a rough and raw production with fierce fast riffing and chaotic black metal with some thrash and punk influence, interwoven with traditional mid paced and additional atmospheric elements of ambient and acoustic to channel your mind into lands of ancient Gaspesian native past. 

Gaqtaqaiaq is his new (3rd) EP released this spring via Nekrart on CD format, containing a beautiful booklet with lyrics and images in full colour and also in tape format via Les Productions Heretiques.

"Abeloth" EP by Snøgg

Black Metal from Slovenia.

We've added to our playlist Snøgg, a two member act from Slovenia that plays a very peculiar style of experimental black metal, with a very distinctive dark and powerful sound that stands out from the generic traditional bands. They inject lots of different elements with and orthodox feel and improvised dynamic composition style that captivates the listener with their dissonant and harrowing sound.  Great obscure mid tempo atmospheres accompanied by violin, guitar solos and narrations. The album is based on Star Wars legend and later mixed with the dark poetry of Georg Trakl.

The Creation and recording of Abeloth is comprised by a series of performances at Brno and in Ljubljana in October 2016, and in Maribor in November of the same year. Originally performed without drums as Mørk could not make it but it was the first performance that included guests on stage.

Aninø Üfo Letherbee, a renowned classical orchestral and solo violinist joined Ulv (guitars, vocals, keyboards), Køzhl (bass) and Neo-Cymex formerly known as Ampulex Dementor (noisescapes, special fx) for the experiment. On the second and third performances, Mørke returned and Azbuka (noise, field recordings) joined the team. As expected, each edition of Abeloth sounded different and after November, the band never played the whole song again, rather played some kind of derivatives of the song, little pieces or a song with no name, unofficially called Abeloth 2. Vrag (vocals) also joined in on many of those implementations.

In May 2017, the team went to the studio and recorded the tracks for the EP. It was done in the same way as the concerts, a total improvisation. The latest addition to the roster was Zeench, who recorded guitar solos for The Servant – The Mother, and after months of editing and mixing, the Abeloth EP was born and available for purchase through Bandcamp.

Abhor are a veritable institution of Italian occult and esoteric black metal with an unmistakable ritual feel.

Formed in 1995 by Domine Saevum Graven and Ulfhedhnir in the northeast of Italy, the band began with a passion for black metal music and the study of esoteric arts. Less like a band and more like a congregation, they represent a form of global art that embraces all its elements (musical, visual and literal art).

Their first release came in 1998, with the first demo tape "In Tuo Honori Prepartum". From there on, Abhor released six full length albums with a number of labels, doing honorable underground work.

Their new offering "Occulta religiO",  is available through Iron Bonehead Productions, releasing this month Abhor's highly anticipated seventh album on CD, vinyl LP and cassette format.

"Perversión" EP by Corpsehammer

We’ve just added the Swedish black/death metal horde Corpsehammer to our playlist. They’ve unleashed the third chapter of their EP trilogy, via Morbid Skull Records (started with "Sacrilegio" in March last year and followed with "Posesión" last September).

Based in Dalarna (Sweden), and founded in 2016, Corpsehammer is a four member band from Chile and Sweden (including Gaddur from Omnizide). Their raw production and ferocious sounding force and influence is inspired by the first wave of black metal, plus elements of late ‘80s and early ‘90s Latin American/Australian extreme scenes, combined with primitive, malicious and sacrilegious black/death metal.

The lyrics of this EP seem to be abstract, with no specific story or theme and the words are not necessarily connected to each other, yet in some bizarre way the connection exists and the result is sheer madness and chaos facing the devil, perversion and death.

Morbid Skull Records is stocking a limited edition of 99 copies on blood inked tapes, in 3 different colours, black, gold and silver.

From the depths of the Spanish Underground Black Metal scene "You Shall Be There..." is the new debut album of Spanish horde CRYPTIC WANDERINGS. A band from Zaragoza formed out of the ashes of AMNION, taking the name of this band's full length album as their band name and continuing the worship of old black metal. Drizzt of Spanish black metallers Empty is one of the main writers behind the band with member Santi of Ataraxy, as well as Nemac (Empty) on the bass and Gionata Potenti a.k.a. Omega and Thorns (Fides Inversa, Darvaza, Chaos Invocation) on the drums.

A grim and sinister fast paced album that take their own tormented style into a darkened journey that gives praise to the old ways yet with more modern overtones and great production. Highly recommended!
